Internships FAQ

How many hours are required?
All interns are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week sometime during our business hours of 9-5, Monday though Friday.  It is possible to work more hours as long as you notify us in advance.  Please make note of this on your application.

What is the duration of the internship?
Each internship term lasts between three to three and a half months depending on the term.  For the duration of a specific term, please see the calendar.  Staying for a second term is a possibility depending on your internship performance and the availability of the position.  This is something that will be discussed halfway through the term.

Are they paid?
No, MIC internships are unpaid.

Are there any available now?
See the calendar for active hiring dates.  We do occasionally hire at other times so it’s a good idea to submit an application even if the term has already begun, but your best bet is to meet the priority deadline.

Can I get college credit for an internship?
Please check with your college or university advising office.

I’m applying for credit with my college/university.  Can I adjust any of the requirements to suit my specific needs?
Be sure to be clear about your requirements on your application.  We will do our best to meet your college or universities requirements, but we will need to know the expectations before you begin your internship.

I'm not a U.S. citizen, will MIC provide a visa?
MIC is not able to provide visas.  For help obtaining a visa you can contact the International Institute of Minnesota.

What if I'm not a student?  What if I'm a mid-career professional?
You do not need to be a student to apply for an internship at MIC.  We welcome recent grads and mid-career professionals who would like to explore a new career path, but be aware that the internships are clerical in nature.  Much of what you gain from the internship will involve networking and learning about the day-to-day operations of our organization.

What if I'm in high school?
You may apply for an internship, but most of our interns are juniors and seniors in college.

How do I apply?
Fill out an application and attach your cover letter and résumé.  It is best to apply before the priority deadline but we will accept applications after the deadline if positions are still available.

What if I can't get my résumé and cover letter to attach?
Be sure it is in Microsoft Word format.  If you’re sure, email the Intern Coordinator.

How do I apply for a job at MIC?
Because we are a small organization we rarely have employment opportunities, but when we do they are posted on our website under the What's New section and on the MN Council of Nonprofits website.  The best thing to do is to keep an eye on these sites and apply for specific openings as they come up.

What would I learn?
Like most internships, ours tend to be administrative in nature.  There are opportunities to work on projects, but because internships are short-term they don’t involve a lot of independent project development or event planning.  What we do offer is an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a nonprofit organization, general professional skills such as prioritizing, multi-tasking and working with different people as well as a potential for networking and becoming more familiar with international organizations in the Twin Cities.
