Participants
How can I join a Great Decisions Group?
Groups are available in 50 locations in Minnesota, both in the metro area and Greater Minnesota. For a list of groups, click here.
Do I need to buy a Briefing Book?
It is recommended that participants purchase the Great Decisions Briefing Book which contains articles on each of the topics as the basis for discussion. If it is not feasible for each group member to purchase a briefing book, some groups keep 1-2 books in a library or a central location for loan so that all group members have access to it.
How are group meetings arranged?
Each group has a leader or convener who arranges meeting times and place and contacts the speaker, if desired. This person also communicates logistics to group members, may arrange refreshments, if desired, and may introduce the speaker. Some groups rotate these responsibilities among its members.
Are the discussions facilitated?
The facilitator may be the group leader or convener or another member of the group. The facilitator ensures that discussions move smoothly, that the discussions are not dominated by one or two persons, and that attendees are able to freely contribute their opinions. The Foreign Policy Association makes available a Program Handbook which includes “Tips for Facilitators”. It is not necessary to have prior training. Facilitation may also be done by the speaker. (See sample meeting format)
Are attendees expected to complete evaluation forms?
All group leaders are encouraged to provide meeting attendees evaluation forms to complete and return. This information is helpful in assessing speaker effectiveness, logistics and impact of the program. Leaders are encouraged to summarize and share this information with the Minnesota International Center. See an example evaluation form.
